Track Overview

Designed to meet the needs of city staff in a variety of key roles, Loss Control Workshop sessions are divided into tracks. Stick with your area of expertise, or pick and choose courses based on areas you would like to learn more about. All sessions are open to any attendee.

Join us for fast-paced sessions designed for clerks, administrators, and other city staff. We’re digging into employee wellness and safety, licensing ordinances, using new technology to inform residents, and effective risk management — allowing city employees in any role to expand their loss control toolbox.

    Employee Wellness: Moving in the Right Direction

    We are digging into successful employee wellness initiatives. This session will cover stretch-and-bend programs, return-to-work processes, managed care plans, and experience modification (e-mod) rates.

    9:45 – 10:45 a.m.
    Timely Tech Topics (for Busy People)

    A treasure trove of tech topics! We will explore upcoming trends and share approaches to receiving federal funding, harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) tools, securing successful IT support contracts, and making your website Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant.

    10:45 – 11:30 a.m.
    At Risk: Loss Control Strategies for Real Life

    Practice navigating the complex landscape of risk management. Apply a hands-on approach to identifying, assessing, and mitigating potential losses by applying management strategies to actual scenarios.

    12:15 – 1:15 p.m.
    Granting and Denying City Licenses

    Learn when and on what grounds a city can approve or deny a license. We will review the various licenses cities may issue and what basic components should be included in your city’s licensing ordinances.

    1:15 – 3:30 p.m.
    City Workplace Safety

    Plan, recognize, respond, and report—we are sharing tools to manage threats in your community. We will discuss adapting a city safety plan with specific guidelines for communication and security. Plus, learn to recognize and de-escalate behavior, diffuse confrontation, recognize risk factors, and plan for an exit strategy.

We have a full morning of practical loss-control solutions for police and public safety personnel. We will be discussing what top performing agencies do to improve wellness and reduce incidents, officer injuries, and turnover. Plus, explore the League’s Physical Abilities Testing program for incoming officers.

    Experienced public safety leaders share tips for creating a continuous wellness strategy in your agency. We will share resources that support the health and wellness of every officer — from recruitment to retirement.

    Learning From the Best: Insights from Top-Performing Agencies

    Our partners at Benchmark Analytics share how top-performing agencies reduce incidents, officer injuries, and staff turnover. Analyze what the data shows following a multi-year analysis with LMCIT member agencies.

    10:45 – 11:30 a.m.
    Physical Abilities Testing for New Officers

    The job of physically testing police candidates just got a whole lot easier! Learn how LMCIT can assist police departments with physical abilities testing in a way that is legal, fair, and validated as job related.

Public Works and Parks & Recreation Track

Workplace safety topics designed with public works and parks employees in mind. Plans to remodel? We will dig into project requirements for structures with asbestos and lead. We are also focusing on federal laws and reviewing public access through the lens of DOT and ADA guidelines.

Prepare for the year ahead! Designed for insurance agents supporting Minnesota cities, start the afternoon with important updates to the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust and loss control programs, including a special focus on cyber related crimes and issues.

Make your city more accessible place. During this track we will review the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and discuss how you can update your city programs, buildings, and technology to create an inclusive environment where individuals with disabilities can thrive. This specialty track is designed to be useful for all attendees!

    12:15 – 1:15 p.m.
    Advancing Accessibility: Moving Beyond ADA to Disability Inclusion

    Accessibility is about more than legal requirements. This session outlines the role of disability in diversity, equity, and inclusion work. We will discuss how cities can create more welcoming, accommodating communities and workplaces.

    1:15 – 1:45 p.m.
    Unlocking Access: Navigating the Top 6 ADA Deficiencies in City Buildings

    From libraries to police departments, we will review the most prevalent ADA deficiencies in city-owned buildings. Gain valuable insights into key areas that often require attention and equip yourself with practical solutions to enhance accessibility.

    2:00 – 3:30 p.m.
    Time for an ADA Checkup

    This session will explore the most common and/or complex issues and trends we see when city employers need to address employee and applicant medical issues in the workplace.

Credits

We are currently seeking approval for POST, water, waste water, and claims adjusters and insurance agents. Check back here for updates as credits are approved! Approval is anticipated.

APPROVED CREDITS 2024

6.0 related contact hours have been approved for water operators.

  • 3.0 related hours for attending the full Public Works/P&R track (morning)
  • 3.0 related hours for attending the full ADA track (afternoon)

5.5 wastewater indirect contact hours have been approved for wastewater operators.

  • 2.5 hours for attending the full Public Works/P&R track (morning)
  • 3 hours for attending the full ADA track (afternoon)

9 POST credits have been approved for peace officers. NOTE: To obtain all nine credits, peace officers must attend multiple workshops, as both afternoon tracks run simultaneously. 

  • 3 credits for attending the full Police track (morning)
  • 3 credits for attending the full ADA track (afternoon)
  • 3 credits for attending the full Admin track (afternoon) 

5.75 contact hours have been approved for insurance agent/adjuster CEUs. NOTE: You can maximize credits by attending multiple workshop locations. 

  • 2.75 CEUs approved for attending any morning track (Administrative, Police, Public Works + Parks and Rec). MUST attend the full track; no partial credit can be given.
  • 3.0 CEUs approved for attending any afternoon track (Agent/Administrative, Focus on ADA). MUST attend the full track; no partial credit can be given.

Cancellation Policy

If unable to attend, please consider sending a substitute.  All cancellation requests must be emailed to registration@h-i-systems.com seven (7) days prior to the workshop.  Any registrations not canceled by this date will be billed at the full registration price.  

Note: There is no fee for substitutions the day of a workshop, however, please notify the registration desk of any changes.
